Molina gained further commercial recognition for his performance as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2, which became one of the highest-grossing films of that year. Molina gained wide recognition for his portrayal of Diego Rivera alongside Salma Hayek in the biopic Frida, a role for which he won BAFTA and SAG awards. He has worked with Paul Thomas Anderson twice, in Boogie Nights and Magnolia. In the early 1990s, Molina was a ubiquitous presence on British television, with his highest profile role being the lead in the first two seasons of El I.C.D.
His big break came in 1985 with Letter to Brezhnev, followed two years later by a starring role in Prick Up Your Ears. Molina made his film debut in 1981 with a minor role as the guide Satipo in the iconic opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
